Colloidal silver FAQ

Why was colloidal silver banned in the EU?
It wasn’t ‘banned’ per se but rather put on a list of many natural supplements that a self-appointed food/drink body going by the name of ‘Codex Alimentarius’. This happened on January 1st, 2011. It’s now illegal to make any health claims on the packaging/websites if you are selling any of these ‘banned’ supplements. In the early weeks/months in the UK, various health food stores were ‘busted’ for selling products that are on the list and also make health claims on the packaging. As I remember, some small shops had to pay a fine of up to £5000 (approx $7500). From what I see in the UK and on the Internet, many companies are still selling so-called ‘banned’ products, such as colloidal silver and making health claims about it on the packaging/websites.

What are the proven benefits?
Colloidal silver stimulates the immune system, purges the body of toxins and safely kills harmful parasites/bacteria/fungi. It also heals burns, wounds, skin infections, eye infections, dandruff etc. It also has strong stringent properties.

What is the best way to store colloidal silver?
Keep it in a clean, brown glass bottle at room temperature and away from any strong magnets (such as hi-fi speakers).

How long does it keep for?
The PPM drops by a few points in the early days/weeks and then drops very slowly (as long as it is stored correctly). It’s probably fair to say that colloidal silver that started at say 12ppm would still be effective after 2 years in the bottle.

How to mass produce colloidal silver?
Get a 25 litre bottle of distilled/deionised/reverse-osmosis (RO) water and some fairly long silver wires. Put them in the top of the bottle (so they reach around half way down) and turn on the power. Multiple 25 litre (6.6 gallon) bottles can be made at the same time provided you have spare wallwarts/adapters and silver wire.

What’s the difference between ‘ionic’ and ‘colloidal’ silver?
The word “colloidal” refers to a condition where, in this case, a solid particle is SUSPENDED in a liquid (silver in water). The solid particles are too large to be considered DISSOLVED, but are too small to be filtered out. This colloidal condition is most easily detected by what is called the “Tyndall effect”, where a narrow beam of light is shined through the liquid to produce a cone shaped dispersion of the light. The particles so illuminated also exhibit a random, zig-zag activity called “Brownian motion” when observed under a microscope. When something is completely dissolved, both the Brownian and Tyndall effects disappear.
The word “ionic” refers to a condition where a particle has an electric charge. In the case of “electro-colloidal” silver, this electric charge is ALWAYS positive. Silver will not form a negatively charged ion. So, the truth is that electro-colloidal silver is BOTH colloidal and ionic. It is considered colloidal because of the particle SIZE and it is considered ionic because of the particle CHARGE. In fact, most of the biological studies suggest it is colloidal silver’s ionic characteristics that make it such a good germicide. It is also interesting to note that the old chemistry books make no distinction between the colloidal and ionic states of the electro-colloidal metals.
Using a wallwart/adapter, you will make a mix of both silver particles (colloidal silver) and silver ions.
Are there any contra-indications to taking colloidal silver?
As far as I know there are very few indeed. If someone has severely damaged kidneys it is advised to keep the general intake of pure water up and take very small amounts of colloidal silver to begin with, say 5ml (0.15/ounce) of 10ppm. If you vomit straight away after sipping colloidal silver, you are taking too much.

What is the minimum/maximum voltage/amperage for making colloidal silver?
Minimum recommended voltage is 10 and the maximum could be say 35. Some people use far higher voltages but we don’t concern ourselves with that as a) it is dangerous and b) suitable for commercial producers. Amperage can be as low as 500mA and as high as 3000mA.

What is a recommended daily maintenance dose?
25ml (approx 1 ounce) of 10ppm each morning on an empty stomach. You may like to take the same amount again in the evening.

What kind of silver should I use to make it?
999 pure silver, not sterling silver (which is only 925 pure). Some companies tout 9999 pure silver which is also fine but unecessarily pure.

Where do I purchase the silver from?
Any reputable silver wholesalers. For example:
Cooksons of London.
Rio Grande of America.
Is it safe for children to take?
Yes, silver is non-toxic even at high dose. Children need less than adults though as they have less body weight.

Will adding a little bit of salt to the mix ruin the brew?
No, as long as only a tiny amount is used. You will be creating ‘silver chloride’ as opposed to ‘colloidal silver’ however in my opinion; silver chloride is at least as effective as colloidal silver, maybe even better. Colloidal silver will turn to silver chloride anyway when it interacts with the salts in the body.

Why do people add salt to the mix?
It speeds up the making process by adding electrolyte to the water.

Can I use colloidal silver with plants?
Yes, as a spray and as a nutrient for the soil.

Can I use colloidal silver for animals?
Yes, for internal use (mix with water) and external use (as a spray or mixed with a gel of some sort).

What should it look like when finished?
Clear, slightly cloudy or slightly yellow. It all depends on how it’s been made, what kind of water was used, whether light fell on it etc.

I’ve used my jar a few times and I’m noticing a build up of silvery sheen on the glass, what is the best thing to do about this?
Many people (maybe most) use the same container all the time. Once it’s ‘pickled’ it can even brew a batch faster than when using a new jar. Sometimes you’ll see a hazy build up begin to accumulate inside. When that happens, you can simply wipe it away with a clean cloth or paper towel and rinse out with distilled water, but some people just leave it that way.

What is better for skin conditions: spraying colloidal silver on the skin, drinking it, using gel made from Colloidal Silver and Aloe Vera, or all of the above?
All of the above. I like to mix 20ppm with aloe vera as I feel that the aloe gel will ‘lock it in’, it’s also a great natural healing agent in itself. Mixing some DMSO has also been recommended for the purpose of pulling the silver particles/ions into the skin. Another alternative would be spraying the skin with colloidal silver and then applying aloe vera. Or just keep spraying the skin with colloidal silver.

Will pure steam distilled water “go bad” in storage if I don’t use it for a while?
If the bottle is sealed I guess not. If it’s been opened then I assume it will have a shelf life (which will be considerably increased if a little colloidal silver is added to it).
Where can I get darkly tinted amber glass bottles in which to store my colloidal silver?
Old beer/wine bottles are cheapest and best solution. Plastic caps can be purchased from home-brewing shops.

Why should you not store colloidal silver close to electrical or magnetic influences such as microwave ovens, televisions, radios, stereo speakers, etc., (which have large magnets in them)?
Because the magnetic field will pull the silver particles/ions out of electrical suspension and they will end up falling to the bottom of the container.

What does “PPM” mean?
Parts per million. A PPM tester can also be called a TDS tester (Total Dissolved Solids).

Where can I find clinical proof that colloidal silver really kills pathogens?
Google “silver nanoparticles+toxicity”

What is the best way to test the finished water?
Take a PPM reading of the water before making and another one after making. Subtract the former reading from the latter to get an accurate reading.

What is the bearding build-up on wires that can occur during brewing?
This is oxidised silver building up, we sometimes refer to this as ‘silver crud’. Different voltages/amperages will give different results. The ‘crud’ can be filtered through coffee filter paper however it has very powerful effects on skin conditions, so might be worth saving and mixing with a gel or adding to a spray bottle.

Can you nebulise colloidal silver?
Yes, this is a great way to introduce silver through the alveoli of the lungs. A simple, handheld nebuliser can be obtained from Ebay etc for as low as $20.

Is it good to refrigerate?
No. The silver particles/ions will eventually fall out of suspension and stick to the sides of the bottle.

Can you use CS in a retention enema?
Yes.

What are the dosage recommendations for body weight?
It’s not so important as excess colloidal silver will be easily and safely expelled from the body in urine/sweat etc. A general base guideline is 25ml (approx 1 ounce) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach for an average sized adult.

Can I spray it on fruits and vegetables because of pesticides?
Yes.

How can I tell if the silver has fallen out of suspension?
The PPM reading will be lower and you may see a build up at the bottom of the container.

Can you take it when taking any medications?
Yes. Colloidal silver does not interfere will other medications. People worry about interactions. Needlessly, but they worry. The good news is that once they start taking CS, most of their meds aren’t needed anymore. One friend was able to discontinue two Rx meds within two weeks…and they’d told her she’d be on them forever.

Do people really turn blue from colloidal silver?
No, they turn blue (a condition known as Argryia) by inserting silver under the skin, drinking vast amounts of silver water (made with additives) and/or pasting silver ‘mud’ on the face and laying under a sun lamp.

“You must use your common sense. It was NOT even the silver SOLUTION he made by making it so strong….. it was the OTHER THINGS he did that made the SILVER turn him blue. If he had even taken his silver SOLUTION in indicated amounts he would have had no problem and it would have been effective. he did this on purpose for his 15 minutes of fame. it was no accident.”

Are wires the only way to make CS?
No, you can use bezel or bars or coins. Wire and bezel is generally recommended for colloidal silver production as it’s cheap and easy to use and won’t lead to a magnetic build up in the vessel.
